Looking Back at the 2025 Women in Business Summit
March, mh. I hope it landed softly on your shoulders like a bird. Singing the sweetest song, drenching your soul with hope and positivity.
Sa si on Tuesday I was invited for this Women in Business Summit. I ironed my kitenge on Monday night. I did the red carpet walk between my dressing area and the closet.. the audience (my wall) clapped in approval. Let me tell you, the next day.. small small voice told me to go meet a client along thika road before proceeding to the Hyatt Regency for the summit. On my way back, somewhere near Mathare Hospital, the Uber driver says "madam nikama huku si kuzuri". I say "ehee" absent mindedly. Ghafla bin vuu cha mkufuu hu ha!..people are alighting matatus and running in the opposite direction.
Uber driver opens the door and runs. An imaginary bird starts flapping its wings in my stomach.. yooh! People are screaming and running.. I am outside on thika road, I have forgotten makeup, I have removed my bata red labels..I'm earthing by force.
Small small, a boda guy grabs me by the arm..tells me " panda madam twende". My hair is flying like those kumkum bagya movies. He drops me at Shell Petrol station and assures me I'm safe then drives off towards the chaos. I'm catching bearing, Afande with oily face is telling me to hold my handbag nicely. Is when I hear that people are going rogue because gavment is passing (me my loya does not have a loya). I catch another ride, we take the scenic route to the summit on purpose. Although there are chaos in that part of the ocean, the issue of women inclusion, representation and, equality in business is like cooking soup for your extended family on Christmas. Someone will say the salt is small, another doesn't take salt, another one wants firifiri while the other one wants it kwa umbali. Another one's baby wants to sleep and they want the uncooked soup before everyone else. These issues require attention.
That afternoon, courtesy of #zohoafrica and #womeninbusiness , we have a leadership workshop, we exchange business cards, we talk about breaking barriers and get empowered to accelerate action. We have fun, and talk business. We are wiser women, ready to accelerate action. Nothing else matters, just succeeding in our crafts. I forget the barriers I had encountered in the morning.
Dear class, everything na this life, is figureoutable with the right mix of networking, embracing learning, and support.
